CHRISTIAN GROWTH
Here you will find tid bits of writings focusing on Christian growth topics.

Topic: Learning to be content.
HUMBLY BLESSED
In the winter of 2003 God called me to go back to Belize, Central America, for more mission work through His Servant's Ministries. This particular trip was focused on providing dental care in remote Mayan villages in and around Punta Gorda.
These are some of the more primitive villages, and one in particular hadn't had dental care for six years!
We focused on pulling teeth only, no cleanings or fillings. Can you imagine the pain these villagers had to be in? They stood in line for hours to have abscessed teeth pulled. Our equipment was run by air tanks, the dentist used head lamps for light, and I cleaned used instruments the best I could in cold water with added cleansing agents.
Even though I couldn't speak their native language, they responded to a gentle touch or a smile. They were so needy in many ways, but they were a happy people. From our small building I could hear a church group singing to their heart's content..a familiar tune of a hymn I knew!
Here we were serving them, but I was the one who felt humbly blessed by these incredible people. They had so little, yet were so happy, and joyously expressed their faith.
When we ate lunch in a villager's home, we were served like royalty...they were so grateful for our provision of dental care that they did not eat. They gave us their mid day portion instead. I felt so humbled by that experience. The husband gave me a clay bead necklace he made to sell..and I was told this is rarely done because that is their means of income. Again, I was humbly blessed.
I can picture Jesus meeting the needs of others but being blessed in return by the ones He served.
I came back changed. I don't need as much now to be content. We in the U.S. have too much in my opinion. And we constantly want more...we're spoiled, as my daughter put it.
I have a picture of a young village girl on my computer table as a constant reminder of that trip. I not only see her beautiful face, but I see her joy. Her heart. And I am continually humbled by it.
Lord, keep us humble and make us content wherever we are. Help us remember to store our treasures in Heaven, not on earth. Amen.
Proverbs 11: 2 "When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom." (NIV)
